Moving to a new city for university is an exciting adventure, but it can also feel overwhelming. Beyond the campus, Southampton has a wealth of resources and support networks that can help students feel at home, make connections, and access vital services.
As your VP Communities and Wellbeing, I want to highlight some of the most valuable local services in this blogpost. Whether you're looking for job opportunities, essential support, or ways to connect with others, there are many ways to feel a part of the community beyond university life.
Job Opportunities in the City
If you're looking to gain work experience while studying, Southampton offers several job fairs throughout the city in addition to the ones held at the university. These events provide an excellent opportunity to meet potential employers and explore different career paths. You can find upcoming job fairs at Southampton Jobs Fair.
Looking for part-time work? Check out Southampton City Council's job listings for local employment opportunities - there's always something available.
Parking and Transportation
For those who drive, planning your parking can save you a lot of hassle. The city offers a website to check parking availability and eligibility before setting off. Visit Find Parking for more information.
Support for Families – Baby Necessities Baby Bank
Balancing studies with childcare can be challenging. The Baby Necessities Baby Bank provides essential items such as clothing, diapers, and baby products to families facing financial hardship. Visit their website to find a nearby location and access support for your little one.
Community Support – So: Linked
Feeling isolated or unsure where to turn for help? So: Linked is a partnership of four local organisations that provide Community Navigation and Development Support. This service helps residents access food banks, financial aid, mental health support, and fitness programs. You can benefit from this service if you live in Southampton (SO14-SO19) or are registered with a local GP.
Connecting with International Students – Friends International
For international students, adjusting to a new culture can be both exciting and daunting. Friends International is a Christian charity dedicated to helping students connect with locals, learn about British culture, and build friendships. Download it here, they offer an app with useful resources, including local events, cultural guides, and wellbeing support.
