SOLENT Students’ Union is the top Students’ Union for student satisfaction in Southampton, confirms results from National Student Survey (NSS) 2023.
Each year, the NSS provides universities with insight into the attitudes and satisfaction levels amongst final-year university students. The NSS results were released on August 10th.
The survey is comprised of 27 questions about university services and social experience, including ‘How well does the Students’ Union (Association or Guild) represent students' academic interests?’
Solent Students’ Union (Solent SU) is the top Students’ Union for student satisfaction in Southampton, and in the county of Hampshire, scoring an impressive 70.3 percent in 2023, up from 49 percent in 2022.
The massive improvement in student satisfaction also means that Solent SU is amongst the top quarter of most improved Students’ Unions in the country this year.
Winston Alla, SU President for Solent SU, said: “Student voice and representation is at the core of everything we do here at Solent SU. To hear how pleased our students are with our services this year shows that we are making steps in the right direction.
“We still have a lot of work to do and the NSS results will help us to see where we can continue to improve, and work with the university to improve the student experience at Solent University. It is more important than ever that we continue to listen, engage, and act on the issues that impact our students.
“I am really pleased that the hard work dedicated by everyone at and involved with Solent SU has been reflected in the NSS results this year. It is an incredible achievement and I want to thank everyone involved. I would also like to thank our student community as, without them, we would not have been able to achieve these results.”

Editor’s note:
- NSS results cannot be directly compared to NSS results of previous years due to several changes, including response options changing from a five-point scale to a four point-scale, and that scores are expressed as a ‘positivity’ measure instead of the previous ‘percentage’ agreed. However, the scale has equally changed for all and can be compared to other Students’ Union scores
- Solent Students’ Union is a registered charity. Charity number 1153350.
- Solent Students’ Union and University of Southampton are the only universities in Southampton.
- Solent Students’ Union scored 70.3 percent for student satisfaction and University of Southampton Students’ Union scored 66.6 percent in this year’s NSS results table. University of Winchester Students’ Union scored 68.2 percent for student satisfaction, while University of Portsmouth Students’ Union scored 69.7 percent in this year’s NSS results table.
