Responsible for ensuring every student has a voice at Solent University. They look after representation and democracy (e.g. Student Council, Student Reps, etc.) within the Students’ Union and provide political leadership to the organisation.

Overview of role:
The Union President- Student Voice focuses on improving the student experience of all students at Southampton Solent University and represents their views on priority student issues and any national or local campaigns, to the University and Students’ Union. This may involve undertaking research, shaping policies, running campaigns and lobbying for change. They are the lead Sabbatical Officer responsible for the development of democratic processes and are the lead Officer for the Student Board meetings, in collaboration with the University. They lead on matters in relation to teaching and learning, academic support and quality processes. They are the lead Sabbatical Officer supporting the academic representation system. The Union President- Student Voice is a Trustee of Solent SU, as a member of the Board of Trustees, they ensure that Solent SU fulfils its purpose as a students’ union and functions efficiently as a charity. The Union President- Student Voice is also a Student Governor of Solent University.
What would I be responsible for?
• Taking a leading role, alongside staff teams, in the development of Solent SU democratic processes.
• Representing students on specific University meetings, committees, groups and boards in relation to non-academic experience.
• Presenting student feedback to effectively influence positive change the student experience. This can be in relation to the creation or development of policies, campaigns or research.
• Engaging with and listening to the views of students, receiving their feedback in a variety of in-person and digital formats.
• Being the lead Sabbatical Officer Team contact and have responsibility for ensuring that all opportunities to collect feedback and represent the voices of students are utilised effectively.
• Driving communication between the University, Students’ Union and student body to build a culture of collaboration.
• Empowering and supporting students in leadership roles to create positive changes to the student experience.
• Acting as lead spokesperson and ambassador for the Students’ Union alongside the wider representative team. Promoting the value of the Union and its positive impact for students. Taking a leading role, alongside staff teams, in the development of academic representation processes, recruitment and training of representatives.
• Representing students on specific University meetings, committees, groups and boards in relation to academic experience, including teaching and learning; academic support and quality processes.
• Presenting student feedback to effectively influence positive change in relation to the academic experience of students. Whether this be in relation to the development of policies, campaigns or research.
• Driving communication between the Departments of the wider University, Students’ Union and student body to build a culture of collaboration.
• Empowering and supporting Department and Course Representatives to create positive changes to the academic experience of students.
As part of the Sabbatical Officer Team, you will:
• Bringing together the views from across the student body, you will work to improve and support student representation across the University.
• Identify areas where students need their voices enhanced and supported outside of academic structures to help improve student experience.
• Work with students and staff to help create a sense of belonging within the student community.
• Work collaboratively to represent international and mature students and support initiatives to improve their student experience.
• Work collaboratively to support and promote student led groups.
To achieve this, you will:
• Connect with, and regularly meet with students to collect and present a representative view based on feedback.
• Engage with underrepresented and hard-to-reach students, actively seeking out minority voices and representing them.
• Attend Department level meetings as required, such as committees and boards.
• Maintain strong ongoing relationships with key student and staff contacts and provide regular input about what is working well and what could be improved.
• Work in partnership with staff within the Union and University to co-create solutions and positive developments that will benefit students.
• Ensure that positive changes are recognised and celebrated.

• Meetings with senior university staff such as Vice Chancellor and Deputy Vice Chancellor

As a Trustee you will:
• Work with, monitor and support the delivery of the Solent SU Strategic Plan
• Work in accordance and spirit of the Code of Conduct for Sabbatical Officers.
• Be a Trustee of the Solent SU, responsible for the strategic development of the organisation and its financial, legal and reputational health.
• Attend all Board of Trustee meetings and to consider information and advice presented at these meetings when working on strategic development.
• Attend training events where appropriate
• Attend Sub-Committees as required.

• To understand and uphold the Vision, Mission and Values of the organisation and ensure that these guide and inform the work and conduct of the post holder. Solent SU has a democratic decision-making process and the post holder must always respect this when carrying out their duties.
• To always keep Solent SU’s strategic plan in mind, aligning all work efforts with the plan.
• To be knowledgeable of the Solent SU’s Memorandum and Articles of Association and Bye-Laws, as they apply to this post, including any legal requirements.
• To work in accordance with all Solent SU’s policies and procedures, including Health and Safety, Staffing Protocols, Financial Procedures and the Solent SU’s Equal Opportunities Policy.
• To undertake duties from time to time as requested by the Union Senior Management that may be reasonably considered within the scope of the post.
• To attend from time to time, as required, meetings as necessary to meet the requirements of the post.
• To attend all Staff Development Days and training as required. Flexibility in working hours may be required to accommodate this.
• To contribute to the positive image of the Union with students, the University, stakeholders and the local community.
• To be flexible and adaptable in a changing environment, the role holder may be assigned to other areas of the Students’ Union to meet the needs of the service. This will provide development opportunities to broaden experience.
• To be a sabbatical officer, you must be eligible to be a trustee and declare this by the end of the nomination process.
