The Solent Students' Union Cafe, has after it's recent inspection from Southampton's Environmental Health Department received '4' - a GOOD Food Hygiene Rating in it's New National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme.
The Food Standards Agency has developed a National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme to provide consumers with information about the hygiene standards of food businesses at the time they were last inspected by the environmental health service.
Included in the scheme are 6 Levels
| FOOD HYGIENE RATING | DESCRIPTION |
| 5 | VERY GOOD |
| 4 | GOOD |
| 3 | GENERALLY SATISFACTORY |
| 2 | IMPROVEMENT NECCESSARY |
| 1 | MAJOR IMPROVEMENT NECCESSARY |
| 0 | URGENT IMPROVEMENT NECCESSARY |
These ratings are dependant on the inspector's assessment of:
• How hygienically food is handled – how it is prepared, cooked, cooled, stored and what measures are taken to prevent food being contaminated with bacteria.
• The condition of the structure of the premises, including cleanliness, layout, lighting, ventilation, equipment and other facilities etc
• How you manage and record what you do to make food safe.
Southampton City Council businesses will be included in the Scheme later this year, further information including rating's are to be published on-line and can be accessed here www.food.go.uk/ratings

Our staff continually work hard to make sure that Students and Staff at the Solent University are well cared for and all of our customers enjoy their experience at 'Solent' in both safe and secure surroundings. We continually review our processes and train staff in Food Hygiene Standards offering them a another certification to enhance their time at Uni.”
“Working in a relaxed atmosphere its not always easy to keep your eye on the ball but our Student Staff work dilientaly to make sure everyone of the processes in food production are fulfilled and all play their part within our catering services department, you just never know where the next Jamie Oliver or Gordon Ramsey will come from?!.”
