Last year Southampton Solent University and Solent Students’ Union were awarded Fairtrade status.
Fairtrade is a rapidly growing international movement which seeks to guarantee a better deal for farmers and workers in the developing world. Many of these workers struggle to provide for their families. Poor market access and unfair trade rules often mean that the price they get for their crop does not cover the cost of production.
Here at the Union we are committed to supporting, using and promoting Fairtrade products. We sell Fairtrade tea, coffee and snacks in the shop, and serve Fairtrade tea and coffee in the Café Bar. We also sell Fairtrade Solent hoodies and bags.

The University also runs Fairtrade Fortnight every year, with Fairtrade stalls and offers on Fairtrade products. Last year they ran screenings of the film ‘Black Gold’ and held Fairtrade chocolate and wine tastings. In the Union we run special offers in the shop and bar during Fairtrade Fortnight.
