► The YOU Project

How can this project help you?

These days more and more people are obtaining a degree and many people are gaining experience on the job and with the current economic climate it is therefore extremely important that you boost your C.V. and experiences as much as possible whilst at university in order to support all job applications. The You Project is designed to recommend where you can look in order to seek opportunities, if you can’t find what you’re looking for or have tried it all before then contact suactivities@solent.ac.uk and we’ll help set you back on the right track. Alternatively we fully appreciate recommendations or new links for the project!

Academic and C.V. building

This section is designed to help you with your studies, your job applications and anything that may be valuable in the long run. As we are in the middle of terms this section is a little incomplete however it should have a lot more for you by the summer term!

There is a C.V. workshop on the 1st floor of the Students’ Union in the committee room every other Wednesday afternoon, you can bring your C.V. in and it’ll be checked over and discussed with you.

If you would like to learn to touch type contact louise.drake@solent.ac.uk, this is free of charge and is hosted on the University campus.

The library supplies a range of leaflets such as how to reference, so if you’re struggling slightly with your course check them out to see if they can offer you a helping hand.

Types of voluntary work
The above voluntary roles are within charities. They are good for gaining a volunteer certificate and are good if you don’t know exactly what you’d like to go in to when you leave university. But if you do know then you should contact employers within the related industries directly and ask for volunteer work. If you need any further assistance with volunteering simply email volunteering@solent.ac.uk.

Activities

If you like being busy, feel that your studies are well under control and want just a little extra something to do in order to fulfil your time then this activity section could give you just the right ideas in order to fill the left over time that you have!
Exhilaration offers many types of activities and experiences, whether it is team building or adrenalin you’re seeking there’s definitely something here for you. If you log on to the website you can go through the topics. Some of the activities are dance, singing and photo shoot experiences, which often have a special price for two people attending. Other activities are high ropes, survival weekends and abseiling. These are great extra curriculum activities that may just give your CV the boost you need.

If you have an interest in and the time to join a sports team then visit www.solentsu.co.uk/activities to see what sports Solent Uni offer, but if you can’t fully commit yourself to a sports team but do want some enjoyable exercise every now and then, then there are ice rinks and swimming pools in the area.

The nearest ice rink is at
Gosport (023 92511217) and the nearest swimming pool is the Quays (SO15, 023 80720900). If you go to the Solutions gym above the works you can buy a swim card for £2, this entitles you to two scheduled free swimming sessions a week and all other times it’ll only cost you just over £1, which is a few pounds cheaper. Alternatively if you’d like to be a little lass active check out the local bowling complex.

However if there really is a specific sport that you wouldn’t mind playing should the opportunity arise, check out Sport Solent’s Intramural scheme. To find out the latest timetable either visit
www.solent.ac.uk/sport/Intramura
l or email Claire.Slater@solent.ac.uk.

As previously mentioned in the volunteering sector, The Art House is a Southampton charity that focuses on interests in the community, if you want some where quiet to chill or to meet people with similar interests then check out the random but innovative activities they have on offer www.thearthousesouthampton.co.uk. Or alternatively I’m sure there is a society that would suit you if you’re looking for interest groups; we have everything from religious societies to media related societies to activity related societies.

Check out the full selection of what we have to offer at www.solentsu.co.uk/activities. If there are no societies that suit you or you know what you want but it isn’t there then you can start up your own, simply check out the relevant How To guides. There is a lot of information here which may be useful when wanting to conduct any kind of event or activity! The student magazine is not run through a society but if you’d like to find out how to write for it check out the website www.solentsu.co.uk/resus or email sucommunications@solent.ac.uk.
