Where students are heard, students are supported & students are given choice
Solent Students' Union have been on the search for students to write and perform an Olympic inspired song in the lead up to London 2012. In partnership with Southampton Music Service (part of Southampton City Council) students were given the opportunity to submit a song which could be taught to choirs of children ages 5-10, using repetition and ensuring it was Olympic inspired. The winning entry will be:
• Taught to two children’s choirs in Southampton as part of the Southampton Musical Alphabet event (an official London 2012 event with Music Nation) and performed live by the choirs live in West Quay on Saturday 3rd March at 1pm. Footage from the Musical Alphabet will be sent to the BBC.
• Taught to children across Southampton as part of the Spring Schools project in the spring term by Southampton Music Service.
Our winning entry, selected by Southampton Music Services, was Music Nation, by Grace Hancock, second year BA (Hons) Popular Music Performance. The runner up was Start With A Bang, by Louis Duarte, BA (Hons) Popular Music and Record Production (graduate) - Find Louis at http://www.socomusicproject.org.uk/index.html

Solent SU are getting involved with the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games through the national Be A Champion project. Be A Champion is about making sure that you as a student can make the most of the once in a life time opportunity that the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games presents. Over the summer we went on a search for inspirational students looking to excite and enthuse students across campus to make sure London 2012 is represented, involved and a memorable part of your student experience in 2012!
We selected four great students who you should meet on campus over the next year! Check out their blog to keep up to date http://solentolympics2012.wordpress.com/meet-the-team/

Olympic Torch comes to Solent SU. October 11th 2011 saw Solent SU host the Olympic Torch as part of our winning bid to Coca-Cola's Olympic Torch Tour. Over 2,500 students flocked to Guildhall Square to have their photo taken with the official Olympic Torch, alongside special guests including the Mayor of Southampton, Eco Warriors from St Marks Primary School and specially chosen students St Annes Catholic School. We want to say a massive THANK YOU to all the students who gave up their time to help run this event (a massive 77% student run!) including Radio Sonar, Sonar TV, our Angels and SU volunteers.
British Week: 13th - 17th February - Come and celebrate the best of British and get inspired to support Team GB!
A to Z of Music: 3rd March - Solent SU have been asked to join this official Olympic event, supported by BBC Three. Come and join in with an Olympic Quiz, followed by Olympic KAREOKE at the SU bar. More details coming soon.
